The Old Oak Champions, a group of community leaders, is lobbying Transport for London (TfL) as part of a campaign for improved access to Old Oak Primary School.

At present children, parents and carers can face a roadside walk of ten minutes. The group is arguing that a new bus stop could not only benefit the school but improve access to Wormwood Scrubs and the local community centre..

The Old Oak Champions has a track record of successful campaigns having previously partnered with West London Zone and Citizens UK to address the need for the development of Wormwood Scrubs playground space.

Through increasing local awareness of the issue and collaboration with local councillors, its efforts won the commitment of £200,000 towards park redevelopment, resulting in the installation of amenities such as a zip line, trampoline, and water fountain.

The group is now turning their attention towards improving transportation access in their community. With many students commuting from afar, it says the existing bus stop, situated a 10-minute walk away, has left them feeling disconnected from the area. In response, the champions launched a Climate Charter and presented their requests to the local council, asking for a closer bus stop, installation of planters, and an increase in waste and recycling bins.

Cllr Alex Sanderson has supported these proposals and the borough’s Ecology team has since visited the Champions to show the design of the new planters and where they will be placed in the local area.

However, the Champions now await TfL's response about the challenges faced by residents on their daily commute. The group is organising a community walk, inviting representatives from TfL, the local council and Cllr Sanderson to join them in "walking a mile in their shoes." The walk will take place on 1 May 2024.
