Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter has officially opened the new Macmillan information service at Hammersmith Hospital.

Located in the Garry Weston Centre, the service provides information and face-to-face support for people affected by cancer, either as patients, carers or family members.

The service is managed by Sophie Brown, Macmillan information and support facilitator, who said: " As treatments improve, more and more people are living with cancer in their daily lives. This means that in addition to medical help, people need practical, emotional and financial support.

" The new service is deliberately located in the Garry Weston Centre to maximise the number of people who will benefit from it.

" “Even when I’m not here, the leaflets and information are available. I want people to drop in for a chat or to pick up some information. We stock information materials covering a range of areas, including particular types of cancer and treatments, cancer screening programmes, how to break bad news to loved ones and the help that is available to support people with a diagnosis of cancer."

Sarah Gigg, senior Macmillan development manager for London who spoke at the launch, said: " This week in London over 500 people will hear the devastating news that they have cancer.

" We know an alarming number of people living with cancer feel isolated and alone because of their illness. Macmillan is absolutely determined to stop this from happening and this new service at Hammersmith Hospital will go a long way towards making that a reality."
