People living in all parts of Hammersmith and Fulham can expect a knock the door from the police.

Officers from local Safer Neighbourhoods Teams, or SNTs for short, are currently visiting every home in the borough in an ongoing project to strengthen ties between officers and the local community.

The Street A Week scheme involves officers or PCSOs on each Safer Neighbourhoods Team visiting every home in a designated area.  Officers introduce themselves to the occupier, explain what the SNT does and how they can be contacted.

Officers will also ask if the residents are experiencing any problems or concerns within their community. Finally, officers will feed back to residents how the team has addressed the problems or concerns they have raised.

Police say the scheme is already proving successful, with police directly tackling and resolving issues raised by local residents.

In one case, residents flagged up issues surrounding a club night operating in the local area, which was previously unknown to the police. After closing time, residents in the surrounding area were being affected by noise and anti-social behaviour. Acting on this information, officers worked with the club and the licensing authority and the club night has since been stopped.

Inspector Tony Hirst of Hammersmith Safer Neighbourhoods says: " Street A Week has already seen some great results. As well as dealing directly with the concerns of local residents, we have seen new people joining local Neighbourhood Watch schemes and local ward panels as a result of meeting their local officers.

“Through Street A Week we hope that a larger percentage of our local community will now know who we are, what we do and how we can help them.”
