Local Police Community Support Officer Mel McClure has returned in triumph from the World Police and Fire Games in Belfast, having won an amazing eight medals - five gold and three silver.

Mel, who is a PCSO in Hammersmith and Fulham, competed in six events over five days. Mel competed and won gold in the 800, 1500 metre races the 10,000 cross country and half marathon as well as winning Silver in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre track races.

Mel was also the captain of the Vets 50+ Great Britain and Canadian team who won Gold in the half marathon and silver in the cross country.

Mel says: "I was very pleased with mine and the teams performance throughout the week. Although I had some hip issues on the last two days, I was able to finish the half marathon in 1:59:52 which gave me gold by 33 minutes.

"The competition was really strong with the 800m run ending with a sprint finish between myself and a Brazilian athlete in which I prevailed by less than one 10th of a second."

The World Police and Fire Games is a biennial event for serving and retired police, fire, prison and border security officers. 

It is the third largest international multi-sport event in the world and the largest ever sporting event to take place in Northern Ireland. In 2013 there were almost 7,000 competitors taking part in 56 sports held at 41 venues across Northern Ireland with competitors from 67 countries taking part.
