The world premiere of 10 Nights by Shahid Iqbal Khan takes place in the Bush Theatre later this month.
Originally scheduled to open last week it will now begin preview performances on Thursday 14 October and will open on Monday 18 October. If you have booked tickets for an earlier performance the team at the Bush Theatre will be in contact with you.
Explaining the reasons for the delay the Bush Theatre said, "Every rehearsal process takes a play in new directions, especially when producing new writing. This is even more true when developing creative accessibility, elements which are not only functional, but part of the beauty of this production.
"If there is one thing that we have learned in the last year, it’s the importance of taking the time and space to get the work right, and to take care of the people making it. We have made the decision to delay the opening of this production to allow our team the time they need to achieve its full potential."
The play which runs until 6 November tells the story of one man's spiritual journey and facing the consequences of your actions.
When Yasser decides to take part in itikaf, sleeping and fasting in the mosque for the last ten nights of Ramadan, he soon regrets his decision. But as he navigates smug worshippers, shared bathrooms, and recurring thoughts of chunky chips, Yasser’s isolation forces him to confront a side of himself he’s been trying to keep hidden.
The play, which features deaf actor Safyan Iqbal making his professional stage debut and Zaqi Ismail, is directed by Kash Arshad.
Shahid Iqbal Khan’s foray into creative writing began with a short play for Carol Godby’s Festival of Plays (Met Theatre, Bury). He joined the Manchester Muslim Writers’ group not long after, a collective that inspired him to explore and compose poetry. He was Associate Artist for Phizzical Productions and is an alumnus of Graeae Theatre’s Write to Play programme. He is part of BBC Writersroom Writers Access Group (20/21) and the Writers Group co-led by Royal Court Theatre and Deafinitely Theatre (20/21).
Director Kash Arshad is a mixed heritage (Scottish/Pakistani) theatre director based in Halifax, West Yorkshire. His recent directing credits include Mountains, Moon Landing and Parallels - Part of Beyond Chinatown Signal Fires Project (New Earth Theatre Company,) 13 and Love and Information (ALRA North). He is also an Associate Artist for National Youth Theatre, Mentor Director for National Theatre Connections, and Director for New Earth Theatre's North West acting Academy.
All performances will be audio described, will creatively integrate captioning and British Sign Language (BSL), and will be performed in a Relaxed Environment.
