RCN Award given to Jason Towner, TVU Student and Hammersmith Resident.

The achievements of Hammersmith local and Thames Valley University (TVU) student Jason Towner have been recognised in the Nursing Standard's Nurse of the Year 2009 Awards. Jason has been awarded the Royal College of Nursing Fellows Student Nurse award.  

Organised by the Nursing Standard journal, the Nurse of the Year Awards are acknowledged as the most prestigious accolade for recognising and rewarding excellence in nursing. Established in 1988, the Awards identify outstanding achievement and promote best practice and innovation.

Jason, 37, was up against university students from across the country, but took home the prize. In his final year in BSc Adult Nursing at TVU, recently rated number one in England for nursing and midwifery in The Guardian university guide 2010, Jason said, 'I am very pleased and immensely proud to have received this award. The Nursing Standard and the Royal College of Nursing are doing sterling work so to be awarded by them is a real honour.'

 

Nursing is actually Jason's second career. Having worked in pest control for 15 years, changes within his company prompted Jason to re-evaluate what he wanted to do with his career. 'I had always been interested in nursing but never followed up on it, and went into pest control when I was younger. My role was starting to change so I decided now was the time to make the move and do something different. I've been really well supported by TVU throughout the course and the teaching and work placements have been great.' Jason is currently completing his final placement in a respiratory ward at St Mary's Hospital Paddington and dissertation, and once registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council he hopes to secure employment with St Mary's.

 

Commenting on Jason’s achievements, Tatyana Nadif, TVU Adult Nursing lecturer, said, 'This is a fantastic achievement by Jason and a real reward for all the hard work and commitment that he has put into his nursing studies. We are exceptionally proud of Jason and wish him every success with his future endeavours.'

 

The winners from the twelve categories will be presented with their awards on Monday 9 November at the Dorchester Hotel, London. At the end of the evening one of the category winners will be chosen to receive the Nursing Standard's award for Nurse of the Year 2009.
