ARTISTS AT HOME (AAH) celebrates its 35th anniversary this year when 51 artists in the area invite the public into their homes or studios over the weekend of 13-15 June. As usual, there is a rich diversity of works on show: painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, textiles, printmaking, jewellery and mosaic.

The more artists that join the scheme, the greater the buzz, as visitors energetically go from one address to another. Families are welcome, and it is a great way to introduce children to art. The sight of small babies staring with puzzled expressions at large canvases, buggies in the hall and bikes in the front garden are all part of this friendly weekend. There is no charge for admission, refreshments are usually available and although artists are always pleased to make a sale, browsing is an important part of the process.

One of the most notable artists in the group, Ben Johnson, is finding time to take part despite his hectic schedule in Liverpool this year. Johnson has been commissioned to produce a vast iconic panoramic painting, to act as a catalyst for other major projects there during the year. Johnson says: “I feel very proud to be associate with the European Capital of Culture and I am enjoying an extraordinary experience of painting in front of several hundred people a day”.

Some people focus on just a few artists, whilst others show an impressive dedication to the Fletchers Art Buyers’ Prize Draw (Fletchers the estate agents continue their valuable role as principal sponsors). Visitors to 10 or more studios are eligible to enter a prize draw for a cash sum of £150 to be spent on art of their choice.

Making art can be a lonely process, especially for those who work in isolation, and after so much time and energy has been invested, it is really important for the artists to have an opportunity to stand back and let viewers engage with the work. This synergetic process is fundamental to the success of AAH; it is so much more than the sum of the parts.

On June 7 and 8, AAH will have a stand at Green Days, the launch of the Bedford Park Festival. Studio guides and maps can be picked up, and a rota of artists will be there to chat to visitors and potential new members of AAH.
