Public Asked to Stop Bringing Donations to H&F Collection Points

While Westway Sports and Fitness Centre still has room and food for fire evacuees

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has released a statement this evening asking for no more donations to be made for the Grenfell Tower fire evacuees.

The council says: " Kensington and Chelsea Council has been inundated with donations for the people affected by the fire. They say ‘thank you’ to everybody but they now can’t take any more donations. So please don’t bring any more food or clothes to any of the Hammersmith & Fulham collection points. "

Instead, the council advises anyone wishing to volunteer or to donate money to visit Kensington and Chelsea Councils' Twitter account.

Meanwhile, Westway Trust, the charity which is transforming 23 acres of land under the Westway flyover has said tonight that there is still plenty of room and food at Westway Sports and Fitness Centre for residents of Grenfell Tower made homeless by last night's devastating fire.

The trust says: "Westway Sports & Fitness Centre is welcoming local residents who have been evacuated from neighbouring buildings. We have facilites to support 300 evacuees, including bedding, shower and bathroom facilities, food and drink.

"Social workers, crisis housing advisors and Victim Support are on site to support those in need."

While asking people to pass on the message that accommodation is available, the charity says is also asking people not to bring further donations.

It says: "We are overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of those who have brought donations to Westway Sports & Fitness Centre and we would ask you to hold on to future donations for the time being while we sort through those that we have.

"When we need donations again we will update via our website and on Facebook and Twitter.

"Once we have a better understanding of what is needed we will post further updates."
