Local youngsters are invited to join
Local youngsters are being invited to join the Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC), who hold regular meetings in White City.
The Cadets are an independent, uniformed voluntary youth organisation, supported by The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), and are open to young people aged between 14 -19 from all backgrounds.
The local Cadet Unit meets once a week at Burlington Danes School in Wood Lane. Meetings usually include drill/inspection, some sort of physical activity, a guest speaker or input on a police related topic as part of an ongoing training programme.
At weekends and in school holidays Cadet Units might go away on camps/adventure weeks to different parts of the UK or even abroad. Various Cadet competitions are also held during the year, which test the skills developed within the VPC Units.
While Cadets are not allowed to patrol with police officers, they often perform duties in support of local policing objectives. They can perform tasks such as crime prevention initiatives, message/leaflet delivery, test purchase operations to combat underage sales of alcohol, fireworks and knives and involvement in non-confrontational local events.
Earlier this year, the Hammersmith & Fulham police cadets helped out at the annual Crime Summit by assisting elderly and disabled residents to move to the various ward workshops.
Cadets also get involved in MPS-wide deployments such as Trooping the Colour, Remembrance Day Parades, the London Marathon and various conferences and charity events.
Anybody interested in joining should contact the local VPC Cooordinators, PS Philip Ross Martyn or PC Steve Wise on 0208 246 2522 or 0208 246 2966.
