Stats show vast majority of local children walk to school
Figures released by the Department of Education show that the majority of schoolchildren in Shepherd's Bush and White City use their two feet to get themselves to school.
As part of research carried out for School Travel Planning (STP) which looked at all the problems caused by travel to and from schools during the day, the figures show that nationally, most children walk to their primary school with car being the second most popular mode of transport, ahead of cycling.
The data for local schools also shows that the vast majority of children walk. Those attending Wendell Park primary school make the highest number of car journeys, with 90 children choosing that mode of transport. 50 children at the Good Shepherd primary school travel by car as do 40 children at St. Stephen's.
Surprisingly few local children cycle: only 10 from Greenside primary school use their bikes as do 10 from Wendell park primary school. While 540 Phoenix High School students walk, 280 use some form of public transport. Meanwhile, many of the children attending local special schools, such as Jack Tizard, travel on dedicated buses. The stats show that no local children are known to be travelling to school by taxi.
All schools in the borough, including independents, are expected to now have a travel plan in place which helps reduce the negative effects of this daily flow of pupils, staff and parents. Solutions put forward in these plans should concentrate on making the journey to school more sustainable (less polluting and damaging to the environment), healthier (using active transport methods such as walking or cycling which provide children with valuable exercise) and safer for all children and adults.
The table below shows how local children get to school:
