Shoppers were bemused to find themselves surrounded by hundreds of young people rushing to the town centre and queuing around Shepherd’s Bush Green on Saturday, 22 October.

The reason for all the excitement was a clothing ‘drop’ by independent streetwear company Corteiz, promising to sell its brand of cargo trousers - which fetch hundreds of pounds when sold second hand - for 99p.

Corteiz, launched five years ago by a mysterious figure known as Clint419, has created a cult following by operating through word of mouth and social media, using private Instagram pages and websites with special codewords to spread the word about its stunts, called drop days - the only times its clothes are available.

This drop started on Friday with a cryptic message on Twitter from CRTZRTW (RTW meaning the slogan Rules The World).

It was accompanied by a video showing Shepherd’s Bush Market, and was followed by a tweet on Saturday morning saying COORDINATES DROPPING @ 13:45.

At 1.45pm an image appeared on Twitter, showing the coordinates and 99p in coins.

This led to chaotic scenes around Shepherd’s Bush Green, with potential buyers flocking to the scene - some from the other side of London.

However, anticipation turned to anger and disappointment for many as it became clear they were there to compete for tickets to buy a limited number of the cargo trousers, with the vast majority going home with their coins still in their pockets.

At 4pm, CRTZRTW tweeted @crtzrtw: “Tickets are done. Go crib.”

This received a hostile reception, with attendees saying the organisers had lied claiming it was to be first come, first served, and that the whole event was badly organised.

Comments from erstwhile fans included “Lies ALL LIES” , “so disappointed” and “waste of time”, while one tweeter summed up the mood, saying: “Whole thing was a shambles mate.”
