It's An Honour

Local woman wins award in New Year's Honours

A local resident has won an award in the New Year’s Honours.

Clare Tickell, who is the Chief Executive of Action for Children, has been awarded the honour of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to young people.

Tickell, who has headed the children's charity for the past five years, has spent her career working with excluded groups and communities including the most vulnerable and neglected children, as well as young people and their families.

Action for Children works with disabled children, on youth issues, with children in care and supports families throughout the UK.

Commenting on the award, Action for Children's Chair of Trustees Pamela Chesters said: “Clare leads Action for Children with real passion and commitment and is a strong champion for children and young people. Our work on issues such as child neglect means Action for Children sees first hand children facing some the of most challenging circumstances. Clare and her team work tirelessly to offer support, understanding and solutions that last. She thoroughly deserves the recognition that this honour represents.”

Clare Tickell said she was delighted to have won the award: “It has been such a privilege to work with children and young people throughout my career. Our work is vital in supporting and representing so many communities, and I am so proud to get this award. I hope it will continue to reflect on the work of everyone involved in Action for Children.”

Honours are normally awarded twice a year: one list is published on The Queen's Birthday in June and one at New Year.

Since 1993 the public have been able to nominate those they think worthy of an award and, according to the Cabinet Office: “Anyone can be nominated, but only exceptional people are honoured”.
