St. Stephen's tops the table of local schools
Primary school league tables published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families show the vast majority of local children tested at Key Stage 2 made the expected amount of progress in both English and Maths.
St. Stephen's CofE Primary School tops the local table with 100% of pupils achieving Level 4 and above in both Maths and Science. St. Stephen's also tops the league in English with 93% of those tested gaining Level 4 and above. This is closely followed by the Good Shepherd RC Primary School, where 92% of children achieved Level 4 and above in English.
At both St. Stephen's and Bentworth Primary School, 100% of students had made the expected amount of progress in maths.
The tables reflect the results from Key Stage 2 tests taken by year six children in May 2009.
Key Stage 2 tests are taken at the end of the Key Stage 2 programme of study, normally in Year 6 when children are 11 years old. Children have to be assessed at working at level 3 or above to take the tests. The subjects covered are English, mathematics and science.

To achieve Level 4 in Maths, children have to meet the following requirements:
Comfortable finding a way to solve everyday problems
Clear and organised working out
Can add, subtract, multiply, divide in the head comfortably
Knows multiplication tables up to 10x10
Self checks and estimates
Can plot co-ordinates on a graph
Can work out area and perimeter
Can represent and interpret data in suitable diagram form.
To achieve Level 5 in Maths, children have to meet the following requirements:
Thinks mathematically
Can explain own reasoning
Can do simple equations, easy algebra
Can calculate in fractions and percentages
Can approximate
Can calculate angles
Understands the principles of probability.
To achieve Level 4 in English, children have to meet the following requirements:
An active reader – infers, predicts, visualises
Reads ‘between the lines’
Gets the point, the moral, the message
Writes extended sentences, uses commas to chunk them up
Chooses words for effect.
To achieve Level 5 in English, children have to meet the following requirements:
Recognises writing technique and bias, has a sense of the literary
Writing is well-organised and paragraphed
Uses standard English as appropriate
Composes complex sentences, can use a subordinate clause
Adapts writing to suit audience and purpose.
